MAIA STARK
Maia Stark's work primarily focuses on the visual presence of doubles, twins, and dopplegangers in visual art. Doubles (such as twins, clones, dopplegangers, etc) are socially, visually, and psychologically tied to loneliness, melancholy, and death. The presence of doubles not only questions the instability of identity, but calls in to play personal reflection and concepts about mortality and the other-wordly. Stark often draws on personal memories as well as Nordic folklore to form imaginery, drawing on her experience as an identical twin to contextualize narrative.
Her Master's thesis (from the University of Saskatchewan) focused on the impact and influence of doubles, twins, and dopplegangers in visual art.
